Biodiversity Loss in Urban Commons

2021

Biodiversity loss in urban commons is a large scale urban strategy to decrease the loss of biodiversity in Brighton, a city which has high pollution levels and it’s own collection of Elm trees. The strategy spans across Valley Gardens with fours space bridged with a treetop walkway. All these spaces are considering biodiversity and ways the city can bring more biodiversity, as well as maintaining the bio diversity already there. These four sections are Flora, Fauna, Extinctions and Biodiversity Habitats.

The environment we live in is suffering daily due to pollution, over-exploitation and building up areas in our landscape. These are all then contributing to climate change, which is causing biodiversity loss globally, massively within City’s. Within the UK alone we have lost 50% of our biodiversity, meaning many species are at risk of going extinct. The goal of the pavilion is to bring awareness of loss of biodiversity by educating the community of Brighton how we are contributing to biodiversity loss but also on the biodiversity found within the area. The idea behind it is people come through the pavilion educating themselves, to then enter the middle which holds plants and seed bombs within the walls and centre. People can take home the plants or throw seed bombs somewhere they feel needs biodiversity. This grows biodiversity in the city and creates an idea that once the plants and seed bombs are taken, the function of the pavilion is complete. Then, when the function is complete, it creates a habitat for animal species and insects.
URBAN STRATEGY FUNCTION – The four sections of my urban are all linked to biodiversity. Flora is responding to the plant species with a seed bank to hold seeds for the future, so our biodiversity isn’t lost. You then have Fauna which is about animal species and helping the wildlife in Brighton through an animal rehabilitation centre. The third section is Extinction which is looking at the biodiversity that we have lost through history with a library and data on many species. The final space is Biodiversity Habitats which is a fully rewilded space with a tree top walkway. This space is for the animals and creating spaces for many which have a loss of habitat. This is all linked with a bridge system which is decreasing pollution levels.
